Verba exists because a whole language is missing from most phones.
Most English speakers who settle in Galicia learn Spanish and assume it is enough. Then the first letter from the Xunta or the concello arrives, in Galician.
A lot of life here happens in the language: conversations with older neighbors, almost everything outside the cities, and the living effort to keep it strong. With Spanish alone, the deep history and culture of this place reach you only in fragments, on a few marked days a year.
Deciding to learn Galician is the easy part. Galicia has no shortage of grammars, dictionaries, and courses, but almost all of them assume you already speak Spanish, and almost none of them live on your phone.
The big dictionary apps cover dozens of languages and leave Galician out, and so does the phone itself: iOS ships system dictionaries for Spanish, Portuguese, and many other languages, but not for Galician.
Verba is the answer to that gap: the reference that should have come with the phone. It is fully native, works completely offline, and sits where a built-in app would sit, with home screen widgets, Shortcuts, Control Center actions, and lookup from other apps. Galician and Spanish stand side by side, each written on its own terms, because learners here live in both.
Part of the reason to learn Galician is language dignity. It is spoken by more than two million people, it has its own academy, and it carries a literary tradition reaching back to the Middle Ages.
But Galicia is also a historical nation, and its language is where much of that history lives. Spanish keeps you functional here; Galician changes what the place and its people are willing to tell you. Verba is one small contribution toward that, made from inside Galicia.
