Your iPhone has a Spanish dictionary. It has no Galician one.
Verba is the Galician dictionary the iPhone doesn't come with. If you already have some Spanish, a little or a lot, Verba puts it beside the Galician, so you can see where the two languages meet and where they part.
What Spanish alone misses
Most English speakers who settle in Galicia learn Spanish and assume it is enough. Then the first letter from the Xunta or the concello arrives, in Galician.
A lot of daily life here happens in Galician, especially outside the cities and among older neighbors. With Spanish alone you can get by, but you miss much of what's said around you.
Not on your phone
There are good Galician grammars, dictionaries, and courses, but almost all of them assume you already speak Spanish.
iOS ships system dictionaries for Spanish, Portuguese, and many other languages, but not for Galician. Galician dictionary apps like the RAG's work in Galician or between Galician and Spanish, not from English, and translation apps only translate. Some let you save favorites, but the words you pick up yourself usually end up in a notes app.
What Verba is
Verba is an English, Galician, and Spanish dictionary and verb conjugator that works completely offline. It uses the parts of iOS a built-in app would: home screen widgets, Shortcuts, Control Center actions, and lookup from other apps. Galician and Spanish sit side by side, because learners here use both.
Why Galician
Galician has its own academy and a literature that goes back to the Middle Ages, and more than two million people speak it. For much of the twentieth century it was kept out of schools and public life, and many older Galicians grew up hearing that Spanish was the language to get ahead in.
Learning it as a newcomer is one way of taking it seriously. Verba is my contribution to that, made here in Galicia.
